Stuff and stuff

My original intention was to post something smart ass about this but then I read it. And, seriously folks? Quit beating each other. That's effed up. I have to kind of question those statistics, I mean, I'm pretty sure 1 out of every 4 guys I know is not a wife beater. But...either way, this was a perfect opportunity for grunting man-pig chauvinistic humor? Wasted by there just not being anything funny about this.

Crap. Absolute, total, utter crap.

>>The CDC said 23.6 percent of women and 11.5 percent of men reported being a victim of what it called "intimate partner violence" at some time in their lives. The CDC defined this as threatened, attempted or completed physical or sexual violence or emotional abuse by a spouse, former spouse, current or former boyfriend or girlfriend or a dating partner.

Who, at some point in time in their life, did not suffer emotional abuse at the hands of a dating partner on a particular occasion? Shit, some of the arguments I was in as a younger man, where my then-gf and I started insulting each other and screaming were horribly emotionally abusive. And then we'd fuck and it would all be ok for a week and then we'd fight again.

Cast a net this wide and you catch everybody. We're all abusers, victims, or both. The idea that, as whatever imbecille said in that article opined, 25% of women (and 11% of men, not that they mentioned that number again) are "living in a war zone" is absolute drivel.

FEMINISTS: I am not minimizing the problem of domestic abuse, merely saying that it should not be exaggerated. Also, bear in mind that a woman is as likely to be a victim of domestic abuse in a gay relationship as she is in a het relationship. This makes it difficult to view the problem, as I'm sure would be your preference, as yet another instance where mean nasty men opress women. Seems women are equally likely to be abusers as men. And before y'all get your panties in a wad, note that nowhere have I said or implied that domestic violence is acceptable. It isn't.

Maybe some research and learning about what precicely constitutes emotional abuse would help you.

But then again, that would only be helpful if you were actually open minded about this.

Feel free to assume that, because I'm a man, I'm not. That's not being closed-minded, because you're a woman.

Um

Yes

Well

If it's not a rhetorical question then...I hope...the answer is yes?

And did I mention that I have a weakness for intelligent women who can challenge me?

Trust me, this slave knows better than to challenge men such as yourself and Khall, men who are innately powerful and strong, but also wise in their display of both qualities. I find this combination to be incredibly erotic. ;)

The Canadian equivelent of that organization recently published stats that 1 in 4 North American women will experience physical abuse, sexual assault or rape by the time they reach 25 years old. This stat hasn't changed appreciably in 15 years.

I find this incredibly sad. Even more sad that the first reaction of nearly every male who has read these kinds of stats is "I don't know 1 in 4 of my buddies who hit women". Maybe instead the response could be "how many women do I know who have had this experience?" Looking to my own close friends 9 out of 11 have been hit, raped, or sexually assaulted before 30.

*nod* I have read that stat. And yeah, when you extend it over a lifetime it is understandable. As [info]drcruel said, one of my main problems is, it is cast as male-on-female violence, almost exclusively. Very little effort is made to discuss female-on-male, or female-on-female, or even male-on-male violence. The implication and assumption being, men are big evil wife beaters and women are delicate flowers who are victimized by it. Now, I'm not denying that there are sociological forces that pre-dispose men to being more likely to be physically violent, they're bigger and stronger, the bigger and stronger kids on the playground are more likely to be the bullies too. However? I have been in an emotionally, verbally and borderline physically abusive relationship before? And I wasn't the abuser. And I've been punched by a lot more men than you have, too.

I am pretty surprised that you are this much of a 'feminist', that you automatically jump on one aspect of the post I made and one aspect of the article to the exclusion of all else. It is exactly your reaction that puts us on the defensive. I have never, ever, ever physically, emotionally or verbally abused a woman. And I'm sick and tired of being cast as the oppressor of africans, murderer of native americans, persecutor of japanese-americans, beater of women, "historical screwer of brownie".

I've never hit a woman, I've never owned a slave, I've never gassed a jew, I've never stolen the land from a native american, or given them a smallpox infected blanket, I've never used my 'superior' 'privileged' background to make a profit off of the sweat of workers in a third world country. And I refuse to feel 'white guilt' and concede to that nonsense. This is reverse-racism. White people didn't sell black people into slavery. People sold people into slavery. White people didn't massacre the native americans, people between 100-400 years ago had a cultural conflict that the native americans got the short end of the stick of. Your agenda would be much better served if you made allies, rather than putting 'me' on the defensive and making 'me' feel like a terrible person for an accident of birth. I am no more capable of controlling what color my skin is or what my gender is, than anyone else.
